Striking paintwork aside, on the outside the concept car differs little from the well-known 1 Series Coupé. Even a searching look through the side window reveals nothing particularly unusual. As in the 1 Series Coupé, there is ample space for four people. What is interesting is what the BMW Concept Active E hides under its bonnet and boot lid: A specially developed 125 kW/170 HP electric engine and a maximum torque of 250 Newton metres. It can accelerate the first fully electric BMW from zero to 100km/h in under 9 seconds. The electric drive is powered by lithium-ion batteries, also a complete innovation. Optimised power and capacity are key features of the high voltage batteries which allow a range of around 160 kilometres in everyday use. Intelligent battery management ensures that these driving cycles are largely unaffected by weather conditions. The lithium-ion batteries are also extremely quick to charge. The battery system can be completely charged in just 3 hours using a so-called wall box with a current of 50 amps and a voltage of 230/240. BMW developers have integrated the electric drive, power electronics and above all the battery system so cleverly into the existing BMW 1 Series Coupé concept that the vehicle offers not only four full-size seats but also around 200 litres of boot capacity.
